This internship will focus on developing and implementing an integrated communication strategy that strengthens the connection with key constituencies and increases their awareness and understanding of the mission of the New American Welcome Center. This role is ideal for a communication, advertising, or marketing major who is a strong writer and skilled at developing different types of content.

This internship will focus on client interaction, case management, as well as physical and electronic file organization for the NAWC Immigrant Helpline. As a free, confidential resource for the community, the Immigrant Family Services Helpline provides services that include provider referrals, translation/interpretation, and ongoing support through advocacy, application preparation, and case management. The intern will report to and work closely with the NAWC Case Worker.

Internship

The Immigrant Outreach Intern will assist in the engagement of the local immigrant communities through outreach programming and events, particularly ones that focus on mental health, to create broader awareness about the New American Welcome Center’s programs and services. This intern will work closely with the NAWC Immigrant Family Services Manager and the Community Navigator Teams from Latinx, Francophone, Korean, & Chinese communities in order to better understand the specific needs of each community.

The internship will focus on the University YMCA’s legal service provision for immigrants in Champaign County. The intern will report to and work closely with the NAWC Legal Services Manager. The intern will: (1) Learn about and investigate various immigration law-related topics, including immigration laws and policies, country conditions, and more, (2) interact with and assist immigrant community members, (3) hone organizational, management, and written and verbal communication skills, and (4) assist in the development and sustainability of our nonprofit legal services program. This internship will help equip the intern for future employment in a variety of sectors including political, legal, sociological, and/or nonprofit, among others.
